Message From the Pastor

Month of February 2018

Ash Wednesday begins the first day of the season of Lent. Originally named Day of Ashes, Ash Wednesday always falls 40 days before Easter. Sundays are not included in the 40 day count. Lent is a time when Christians prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting, repentance, moderation, giving up of sinful habits, and seeking spiritual discipline. I am asking that we as a church body spend 40 minutes a day in prayer, reading scripture and sitting silently before the Lord, listening. It can be spent 40 minutes at one time or 20 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes in the evening. Keep a notebook and write down thoughts as they come to you. At the end of the 40 days of Lent you will be amazed at the message you have received.

Not every Christian church observes Ash Wednesday and the Lenten disciplines. These observations are mostly kept by the Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian, Anglican denominations, and Roman Catholics. The Bible doesn't mention Ash Wednesday or the custom of Lent, but the practice of repentance and mourning with ashes is found in 2 Samuel 13:19, Esther 4:1, Job 2:8, Daniel 9:3 and Matthew 11:21.

Our ashes are made from the previous year's Palm Sunday branches that we used in our worship service. The ashes are burned, crushed into a fine powder and mixed with anointing oil. During Ash Wednesday services, ashes are distributed by lightly placing the shape of a cross onto the foreheads of worshipers. The tradition of tracing a cross on the forehead is meant to identify the faithful with Jesus Christ.
